Question:
Should I have to work on my Birthday?

I work over at target and lately I've been having a lot of days off probably due to the economy and haven't been getting many hours probably only about 4 or 5 hours most of the time. And I just looked at my schedule yesterday to find out I have to work 8 hours on my birthday. This doesn't seem fair to me at all when I could have been working on all these other pointless days that i've have had off. If they are making me work on my birthday I think they could have at least made it a 4 or 5 hour shift. Just doesn't make sense to me. Any thoughts?

see if you can trade 8 for 8 with someone. that way you're making the money but you get your day off.

Sorry, but whether or not you work on your birthday is out of your control. You are obliged by law to work your contracted hours on the shifts your company provides. The best you can hope for it to ask another college to swap shifts with you, or try explaining the situation to your manager to see if an alternative arrangement can be made. They may be more sympathetic if you offer to take less desirable shifts the following week.

In future, always book with your manager when you want days off months in advance. Birthdays, Christmas, and vacation time need to be booked off even earlier in advance.

This is just one of many disappointments you will have to bear up under as you enter the adult world. Did you see your dad or mom taking their birthday off as you were growing up? Seeing your responsibility through on this commitment will prepare you for even greater challenges in the future. You can fulfill your obligations and still enjoy what's left of the day.

If you're hours are getting cut lately, take the 8 hrs as your birthday present from Target. Money is money. You can always celebrate later.

Life isn't fair. You can work or be out the hours. I seriously don't think they look for who is having a birthday when scheduling.

Your birthday is of zero significance to everyone else.

They DO NOT care about your special occasions. And why should they? Customers still come in on your birthday, just like everyone else.

If you're so desperate to have the day off just call in sick. But don't expect them to bend over backwards for you. They are bigger than you, they are richer than you, and they likely work on their birthdays too.

You might not think it's fair, but the rest of the world probably does. : P

Tell them you have plans, just make up something like a trip away. Either that or bite the bullet and do the shift. Depends how desperately you want it off and how many pennies you have left!

I don't think they care about an employee's birthday... that much.

I guess if you know your boss/manager really well, the one who arranges your schedule, you might have been able to mention that it's your birthday casually with him/her. Maybe you would have more control over your schedule that way.

Happy Birthday btw. :)

They probably didn't even know it was your birthday. I would only see if you could take it off it's a big one like your 21st or even 18th other then that i wouldnt worry about it

I doubt they knew it was your birthday, and I also doubt you asked for the day off. Also, the quicker you learn that life isn't fair, the better off you'll be. Besides that, maybe giving you the chance to earn some needed cash WAS their gift to you.

They are trying to make you quit or get fired. They start by giving you less hours and yup, schedule you and days you wont wanna work.

Tough luck man...

if you ask your boss for time off on your birthday, he/she is going to take that as a sign that you're not such a dedicated worker, and give you lots more of those short days. i'd let it go.

Be glad to work. Every grown up works on their birthday, it is life. You are not 10 and have to have the whole day dedicated to you. Grow up and go to work.

Welcome to the real world. As far as a large corporation feels, you are completely replaceable.

Monday is my birthday and I am working.
