I work in retail and this email is mostly false. There are always stores each year that close some doors due to the fact that a store has not performed well over a period of time. I urge you all to check out the websites of stores that you are concerned about - most retail stores are publicly traded stocks and if they are closing it will be announced in a press release. I can tell you that J Jill is the company that I work for and we are not closing any J Jill stores or Talbot's stores this is all rumor based on the fact that earlier this year we closed our Talbot's Men's, Kids and UK chains. Refer to the the letter on the J Jill main page www.jjill.com and look for the banner that reads "Our Response to Recent Gift Card Concerns". Thank you to our loyal guests who make our brand a success!

I heard the same stores. It actually came from an email from another retailer saying, buy their gift cards because all these stores are closing. Seems a little tacky to me to bank on the other stores from closing.

I'm a Christian, and this letter does not represent Jesus at all, the fact is, they could well take Christ out of Christmas, and change it to xmas. that would be awesome, as Christ never was in Christmas to began with, neither is he accepting of it. It is foolish to try and teach people that Jesus is the reason for the season, they need to do a bit of praying, and a little history. over 200 million tons of alcohol will be consumed on this holiday, there will be more suicides than any other time of the year, alot of church goers will max out credit cards they cant pay back. and the blunt of it all, WHAT GIFT DOES GOD GET? the blame for all this corruption. I am a strong believer in God Almighty, and he is a God of Love, but not corruption, lies, and gluttony. As for getting alone. I can share opinions and beliefs with atheist, and have a true heart to see them saved, but can never accept their theories.

In two stores cases, the email provides out of date information. Ann Taylor announced a year ago it would close 117 stores, the same number the email states.

Same for Charming Stores Inc, who owns Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug and Catherines - they announced in February they would close 150 stores - that is what the email says will happen in the future - but they have shut most of the stores down already.

The companies ask that shoppers not panic, and if one of their local stores ever does close, there are other ways to use those gift cards.

"Any gift cards purchased at any of our brands, any of our stores, can be honored at any of our 2,300 stores or online," Coolick said.

Ann Taylor, Cache, Lane Bryant/Fashion Bug/Catherines, and Talbots all confirmed today they have no new plans to close stores. Eddie Bauer confirmed that it will close two more stores, but that it was part of a strategic long-range plan - and they have opened 16 new stores this year. Many of the stores we contacted could not comment or did not get back with us, but we will update this site if they do.

Here is the email being sent around:

If you have gift cards or credits at any of these stores, now would be the time to cash them in before they close for good.

Ann Taylor closing 117 stores nationwide. A company spokeswoman said the company hasn't revealed which stores will be shuttered. It will let the stores that will close this fiscal year know over the next month.

Eddie Bauer to close more stores. Eddie Bauer has already closed 27 shops in the first quarter and plans to close up to two more outlet stores by the end of the year.

Cache closing stores. Women's retailer Cache announced that it is closing 20 to 23 stores this year.

Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, Catherines closing 150 stores nationwide The owner of retailers Lane Bryant , Fashion Bug , Catherines Plus Sizes will close about 150 underperforming stores this year. The company hasn't provided a list of specific store closures and can't say when it will offer that info, spokeswoman Brooke Perry said today .

Talbots, J. Jill closing stores. About a month ago, Talbots announced that it will be shuttering all 78 of its kids and men's stores. Now the company says it will close another 22 underperforming stores. The 22 stores will be a mix of Talbots women's and J. Jill, another chain it owns. The closures will occur this fiscal year, according to a company press release.

Gap Inc. closing 85 stores. In addition to its namesake chain, Gap =2 0 also owns Old Navy and Banana Republic. The company said the closures - all planned for fiscal 2008 - will be weighted toward the Gap brand.

Foot Locker to close 140 stores. In the company press release and during its conference c all with analysts today, it did not specify where the future store closures - all planned in fiscal 2008 - will be. The company could not be immediately reached for comment.

Wickes is going out of business. Wickes Furniture is going out of business and closing all of its stores, Wickes, a 37-year-old retailer that targets middle-income customers, filed for bankruptcy protection last month.

Walt Disney in the news release said it has also obtained the right to close about 98 Disney Stores in the U.S. The press release didn't list those stores.

Home Depot store closings - Nearly 7+ months after its chief executive said there were no plans to cut the number of its core retail stores, The Home Depot Inc. announced Thursday that it is shuttering 15 of them amid a slumping U.S. economy and housing market. The move will affect 1,300 employees. It is the first time the world's largest home improvement store chain has ever closed a flagship store for performance reasons. Its shares rose almost 5 percent.
