I refuse to cook on Mother's Day!

My mom has been dead for years so I don't have to worry about her cooking because as an adult, I didn't think it was fair that mom had to cook on mother's day! We have gone out to dinner in the past, but this year I want a day to do what I want to do. It is pretty rare that I get a day where I'm not someone's caretaker. Don't get me wrong. I love being a mom, but it is nice on occasion for mom to pick the activity rather than the kids.

This year I want to take the family for a drive in the country. I'll bring my camera so I can take some photos. It will be pretty laid back and we'll get food at some point, but I don't want to be rushed. I just hope it is nice weather. If it rains we'll just have to do it the following weekend.

All my children live close by. It's one of the things I've been blessed with. I won't cook, nor will we go out. If anything my husband will put together a meal. As it stands now. The difference this year is it is also our wedding annniversary, so I don't know if the kids have anything cooked up. Usually they come for a visit, we get to chat without one or the other on the run with work or errands, laugh a little, cry a bit and just enjoy each other's company.

Thanks for the cards!

We usually started the day with breakfast the my husband would make (buttermilk pancakes with nuts and chocolate chips) and the kids would get all the sides and table ready. I usually got flowers or a plant I could put in the yard and/or a book. Sometimes there'd be dinner out instead of the breakfast. My husband usually did the dinner, but as the kids got older they would sometimes pool money to pay for dinner. If we did this we'd go early in the evening since restaurants can be a nightmare on mother's dad in the middle of dinner service.

This year I'm hoping for a multi-course fondue at home with both kids present. We'll see. :^>

Happy Mother's Day --early.

Most Mother’s Days find me out gardening. May is the perfect gardening month. I remember being in my garden one Mother’s Day when one of my kids’ friends said to me “Don’t work too hard today, it’s Mother’s Day.” I responded, “This isn’t work, this is play!” and meant every word of it.

Since my mother died, it’s a bittersweet day for me. I sort of try to ignore it, but of course my own kids won’t allow that. But I really wish they wouldn’t spend their money on me. So while of course it’s a wonderful time to honor our mothers, it’s a little difficult for me. I’d really much prefer it to be any other Sunday in May, with me up to my elbows in potting soil and mulch, and flats of flowers needing to be planted.

Thanks for the cards! As always they're beautiful.
