Supposedly turkey was a mostly New England tradition until World War II. During WW-II, troops from all over the country were introduced to what we all think of as "turkey with all the fixins".

did you ever notice how some of those old wives tales are really good advice. same as alot of the old time medical procedure - like using leaches to drain blood - they use them present day. Well the turkey is the same way - I doubt the natives new what triptofan was, but they did know that eating lots of turkey makes you sleepy and mellow. So - it makes sense to drug out on turkey when you have to spend an extended period of time w/ the your relatives and loved one.

why we eat turkey?
cause its a new world bird. Turkey is indigenous to north america. Too, we eat squash, potato, pumpkin.
These are all things from the new world. I am sure that the turkey was readily available to the first settlers who would not be sacrificing the valuable livestock that they brought over from England.
